Profile of the Center for International Education and Research (IER)

Profile and Functions

The IER was established in April 2004 as a comprehensive center to organize and coordinate the University's interactions with overseas educational and research institutions. This includes supporting the education and living arrangement of visiting international students, providing training on living abroad for outbound students, and coordinating international joint teaching and research programs, as well as assisting visiting international students to interact with the local Japanese community.

Principles

The IER contributes to the global society and facilitates international collaboration and communication through cultivating future leaders and bringing the University's science and technology to the world arena. Further, the IER plays a core role in promoting international communication and understanding among students and faculty members, visiting students and scholars from abroad, and the regional/local community.

Mission

The IER serves to internationalize Wakayama University as its core organizer of international exchanges by:

  1. Providing foreign students with the education and knowledge of the Japanese language and culture, and also developing training materials and method of Japanese language education.
  2. Providing advice and guidance to foreign students on education and life in Japan to create a most academically productive environment.
  3. Providing information, support and training for students intending to study abroad.
  4. Collaborating with surrounding local communities of Wakayama University to facilitate an international experience for the local community as well as Japanese experience for foreign students.
  5. Promoting Wakayama University's international academic and research partnerships and collaborations with overseas academic institutions.
