Course in Special Education

The Course in Special Education has been created in order to develop students into individuals able to serve as coordinators of special needs education in elementary, junior high and special needs schools. Those admitted to the course are provided the opportunity to obtain the first-class license for teaching at special needs schools. The course curriculum not only is a chance to acquire expertise and learn the technical skills to assess and guide special needs children, but also functions as a unique training program that improves the practical capabilities required as coordinators such as educational consultations with caregivers, adjustments of support systems within schools and tie-ups with related institutions. Students engage in specialized study on the provision of guidance and instruction of children with developmental disorders such as ADHD, LD, Asperger’s Disorder, and HFA (high-functioning autism) as well as the conventional targets of education for handicapped children, including the mentally retarded, physically challenged and sick. The aim of the program is to increase students’ practical capabilities to function as teachers able to properly understand and appropriately adapt to the psychological and developmental characteristics of children with special education needs.
