和歌山大学国際観光学研究センター（CTR）では、若手研究者の育成を図ることを目的とし、セミナーやワークショップ等さまざまなイベントを開催しています。
今回「Regenerative Tourism beyond the “Sun, Sand, and Shopping”: Lessons from Guam」と題したワークショップを開催します。
このワークショップでは、CTR短期招へい研究員のFred R. Schumann教授（グアム大学）が講師として登壇し、グアムを事例として、先住民文化の表象、文化遺産の継承、災害からの復興、そして持続可能性といった多様な視点から、「再生型観光（Regenerative Tourism）」の可能性について考えます。講演と実践的なグループワークを通して、小島嶼地域の観光が示す新たな地域づくりや経済のあり方について学びます。

CTR workshop 2026 – session 2
「Regenerative Tourism beyond the “Sun, Sand, and Shopping”: Lessons from Guam」
概要
In this workshop Professor Fred Schumann will address the regenerative potential of tourism by drawing on diverse interconnected areas ranging from indigenous representation and cultural heritage to disaster recovery and sustainability.
In the first part of the workshop, Prof. Schumann will introduce an important cultural performance, the Humåtak Reenactment of Magellan’s “discovery” of the island, and a public-private sustainability initiative, Guam Green Growth (3G). These two sites of destination’s agency offer entry points into issues of cultural representation and indigenous entrepreneurship through approaches such as Educational Tourism and Environmental Tourism. This leads to addressing critical questions of the value of authenticity over cultural commodity, as well as sustained destination health over short-term financial inflow. Regenerative Tourism, a framework in which the visitors actively contribute to restoring of resources, thus offers an important platform in response to traumatic histories of colonization and natural disaster.
In the second part of the workshop, the participants will engage in the task of designing a touristic itinerary, incorporating 3G, cultural integrity, and economic balance. The creative ideas generated by “small island tourism” cover wider and wider territories of economic thinking, concerned with cultural and environmental vulnerability.

Fred R. Schumann（グアム大学 教授）
Fred R. Schumann is a Professor of Global Resources Management in the School of Business and Public Administration at the University of Guam. Dr. Schumann teaches courses in International Tourism and Hospitality and other tourism-related courses in the university’s business program. He oversees the University of Guam’s International Tourism and Hospitality Management courses and is a graduate faculty member in the University’s MBA program. His research interests focus on the sustainable development of small island economies in the Pacific region.
