This cluster makes various communications such as that between two persons, between a person and a machine, and between a person and nature, the subjects of research and interest. The purpose of this cluster is to create new technology and methodology for building human- and nature- friendly systems that facilitate the above communications and to make a positive contribution to society. This cluster covers a wide range of engineering and science topics ranging from fundamental technologies to application fields that enable the creation of such systems.
|Advanced Informatics and Mechatronics||-Creating intelligent machine information systems-
In this cluster, we will explore advanced theories and technologies in the fields of artificial intelligence, system control, mechatronics measurement and robotics, with the aim of creating machine information systems that will be useful to society in the future. By researching and developing integrated systems that are combined with each technology, we will cultivate the ability for students to respond to advanced science and technology.
|Intelligence Science||-Information technologies based on intelligent informatics and computer networks-
The Intelligence Science cluster involves education and research for developing new information technologies based on intelligent informatics and computer networks. Students in the cluster can enhance their specialization through intensive seminars and research activities. Research topics include ambient intelligence, artificial intelligence, brain informatics, cognitive architecture, computer vision, data science, human computer interaction, information networks, machine learning, and web intelligence.
|Design Science||-Apply science for forming things that should be-
Design is a creative and integral activity to form tangible objects through analyzing various requirements and constraints. We promote research and education of design theory and technology focusing the stages of planning, refinement, formation, and evaluation by integrating the inter-stage findings. Those results and experiences will enrich the products, architecture and living spaces in reality, that will make deeper understandings about the cooperative and symbiotic social system involving human, things, and the environment.
|System Intelligence||-System augmentation through learning, recognition, retrieval, and transformation-
Research topics in this cluster include analysis, generation, and presentation of varieties of information media, such as, text, sound, image, and so on. In spite of the wide research area, we put emphasis on the common frameworks of "learning", "recognition", "retrieval", and "transformation", without sticking to the particularity of individual medium. Through these frameworks, we aim at augmenting information processing systems and making them intelligent. On students' education, we focus not only on cultivating research skills of problem finding, formalization, and solution, but also on noble research ethics as future researchers.
|Physical Science and Engineering||-Creation of new technologies based on physics-
We are engaged in research and education of creating novel mechanical and photonic devices and measurement systems by making use of ways of thinking and knowledge in physics. Research topics include fabrication of micromachine devices and soft actuators, optical signal transmission and processing, digital holography and holographic data storage, photothermal microscopic imaging, and mathematical modeling and analysis of physical systems.
|Nanomaterials||-Aiming at creation and application of functional nanomaterials for the future-
We conduct education and research on the important theories and technologies for understanding and controlling, measuring, and expressing functions of materials and biological phenomena at the nano-level by both theoretical and experimental chemistry. We aim to train engineers and scientists who can accomplish innovative manufacturing and conservation of resources and environment.
|Nanotechnology||-Investigate materials in nano-scale, and create novel technologies-
We seek to develop novel functional materials and devices through a control and manipulation of atoms and molecules that constitute materials. Based on the physics of nano-scale materials, our research and education are especially focused on the core fields of nanotechnology, which comprise synthesis of novel materials, advanced measurement of various properties, and exploring novel functions of materials and their applications to devices.
|Intelligent Modeling||-Modeling all phenomena including people and nature-
This cluster involves education and research regarding modeling objects and phenomena in real world. We study the methods for modeling phenomena in a wide range including mathematical concepts, shape, multimedia information, society and environment, and the theory and the techniques to solve the problems in those area through design and analysis of systems, computer simulation.
