North Island College（カナダ）学生が観光学部を訪問＆研修プログラムを実施しました！

2026年6月12日（金）、本学の協定校であるカナダ・バンクーバー島のNorth Island College（NIC）の学生13名および教職員2名が観光学部を訪問し、和歌山市磯の浦および和歌山大学において研修プログラムを実施しました。

本プログラムでは、「観光、沿岸コミュニティ、サーフィン文化、移民、地域アイデンティティの関係性」をテーマに、磯の浦海水浴場において、本学部のアダム・ドーリング教授による講義を受講するとともに、同教員が担当するサーフィン・ツーリズムの授業の視察を行いました。また、地域でサーフィン文化の振興に携わる梅本氏による講話や質疑応答を通じて、サーフィン文化の歴史的背景やその発展、地域社会との関わりについて学びました。

午後には和歌山大学へ移動し、本学学生との昼食交流に続いて、キャンパスツアーや学生交流活動を実施しました。

参加者は交流を通じて、地域社会と観光のつながりについて理解を深めるとともに、国際的な視点から活発な意見交換を行い、学生間の交流を深めました。

 

NIC Students Visit the Faculty of Tourism for a Field Study Program

On June 12, 2026, thirteen students and two faculty/staff members from North Island College (NIC), a partner institution located on Vancouver Island, Canada, visited the Faculty of Tourism at Wakayama University and participated in a field study program in Isonoura, Wakayama city and on the Wakayama University campus.

The program focused on the relationships among tourism, coastal communities, surfing culture, migration, indigeneity, and local identity. At Isonoura Beach, participants attended a lecture by Professor Adam Doering of the Faculty of Tourism and observed a Surfing Tourism class in session. They also attended a lecture led by Mr. Umemoto, who has been actively involved in promoting surfing culture in the local community. Through these activities, participants gained insights into the historical background and development of surfing culture, as well as its connections with local communities.

In the afternoon, the group traveled to Wakayama University, where they joined Wakayama University students for lunch, followed by a campus tour and student exchange activities.

Through these interactions, participants deepened their understanding of the relationship between tourism and local communities while engaging in lively discussions from international perspectives and strengthening connections with one another.
