Faculty of Systems Engineering
The Faculty of Systems Engineering uses combinations of two majors to produce graduates with competency in a variety of fields. The combination of a student’s primary major and a second major personally selected by the student is known as a course. Thus, the course is automatically determined by the combination of majors. One may think of the student’s affiliation as being the primary major, while the course refers to the combination of studies.

Mechatronics |
The mechatronics major provides a curriculum in the fields of mechanics, electronics, measurements and control engineering. Students study the professional technologies needed for the efficient design and safe operation of mechatronics devices - such as robots and automobiles. Offering high performance and intelligent features, mechatronics technologies create a user friendly environment. |

Electrical and Electronic Engineering |
The Electrical and Electronic Engineering Major undertakes education and research relating to electrical engineering, optics, measurements, and signal processing. Students gain basic knowledge and are involved in advanced research activities in these fields. Research topics include optoelectronics, medical engineering, and information photonics. |
Materials Engineering |
The Materials Engineering major offers a fundamental background to the fields of materials science, solid state physics, and electronic engineering. It is intended to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to explore the nanoscale world of materials, and to meet the needs for the development of novel materials and devices. |
Chemistry |
The Chemistry major provides opportunities to learn the fundamental laws of chemistry and a basic understanding of materials, and allows students to develop the specialized ability to comprehend chemical phenomena, interactions at an atomic level, and the design of new functional materials. |
Intelligent Informatics |
This major involves education and research regarding intelligent information systems. The subjects include artificial intelligence, robotics, computer vision, computer graphics and augmented reality. |
Network Informatics |
This major involves education and research on building intelligent information networks. The subjects include mobile networks, Web-based systems, software engineering and big data analysis. |
Environmental Science |
The Environmental Science major aspires to train students to protect the environment, to improve it, and to pass it on to future generations. Students in this major acquire the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to achieving a sustainable society, including preventing environmental destruction, protecting lives and livelihoods from natural disasters, mitigating and adapting to global warming, and creating beautiful landscape. |
Environmental Design |
The Environmental Design major aims to train students to be capable of substantively improving man's relationship with nature. This major encompasses all aspects of the environment, from the natural world to living spaces. Students learn techniques for harmonious coexistence with nature including regeneration of the natural environment, disaster prevention, greenification, and natural energy sources as well as planning technologies such as landscape preservation, urban planning, and architectural design. |
Media Design |
The Media Design major aspires to train students knowledgeable in both media design and information. Students learn aspects of information technology such as sound and visual design, ergonomic interface design, and the methods of design production and planning that serve as their foundation. |
Socio-Informatics |
In the Socio-Informatics major, students acquire the skills needed to plan and design information systems to ensure bountiful lives and societies. Students learn societal frameworks undergirded by information technology, software development, and the high-level communication skills needed to explore possibilities for new information systems. |

Robotics |
The Robotics Course curriculum combines subjects offered by the Mechatronics and Electrical and Electronic Engineering Majors. The Course aims to educate students in developing their skills for creating mechatronics and electronic products such as robots and sensing systems. Studies in this course provide hybrid skills required in all fields of industry relying on cutting-edge hardware technologies. |

Nanotechnology |
The Nanotechnology course integrates the Materials Engineering and Chemistry majors to offer training in both the basic principles of materials and cutting-edge technologies. Computer Science |
This course consists of two majors: Intelligent Informatics and Network Informatics. It provides a curriculum for developing basic skills in the field of computer science, including computer architecture, programming, computer networks, computer graphics, and artificial intelligence. |
Environmental Systems |
The Environmental Systems course consists of the Environmental Design major and the Environmental Science major. The course provides students with the knowledge and skills from the interdisciplinary perspective toward sustainable societies. The graduated students are expected to play an active part world-widely. |
Design Systems |
By fusing the Socio-Informatics and Media Design majors, the Design Systems course strives to equip engineers and designers with the skills needed to lead new industries, training engineering minds with sensitivity in a human-centered perspective. |
Environmental Chemistry |
The purpose of the Environmental Chemistry course is to provide a comprehensive and systematic understanding of environmental problems. Students taking this course will be capable of making contributions in a wide range of fields related to the environmental friendly use of chemicals in society. |
Nanoelectronics |
The Nanoelectronics Course curriculum is offered by the Materials Engineering and Electrical and Electronic Engineering Majors. The course covers materials science, device engineering, instrumentation engineering and information technology, and aims to develop individuals with a wide range of basic knowledge and application skills in these fields. |
Intelligent Systems |
This course consists of two majors: Mechatronics and Intelligent Informatics. It provides a curriculum in the fields of information technology and mechanical engineering for realizing intelligent systems and robotics based on artificial intelligence technologies. |
Network and Socio-Informatics |
The two majors, Network Informatics and Socio-Informatics, constitute this course to develop the capability of design, construction and operation of information network systems and their software and user interfaces for smoothing communications in the society. |

Communication Science |
-Communication Science for an Efficient, Comfortable, and Sustainable Next-generation Society- This cluster makes various communications such as that between two persons, between a person and a machine, and between a person and nature, the subjects of research and interest. The purpose of this cluster is to create new technology and methodology for building human- and nature- friendly systems that facilitate the above communications and to make a positive contribution to society. This cluster covers a wide range of engineering and science topics ranging from fundamental technologies to application fields that enable the creation of such systems. |
Advanced Informatics and Mechatronics |
-Creating intelligent machine information systems- In this cluster, we will explore advanced theories and technologies in the fields of artificial intelligence, system control, mechatronics measurement and robotics, with the aim of creating machine information systems that will be useful to society in the future. By researching and developing integrated systems that are combined with each technology, we will cultivate the ability for students to respond to advanced science and technology. |

-Information technologies based on intelligent informatics and computer networks- The Intelligence Science cluster involves education and research for developing new information technologies based on intelligent informatics and computer networks. Students in the cluster can enhance their specialization through intensive seminars and research activities. Research topics include ambient intelligence, artificial intelligence, brain informatics, cognitive architecture, computer vision, data science, human computer interaction, information networks, machine learning, and web intelligence. |
Design Science |
-Apply science for forming things that should be- Design is a creative and integral activity to form tangible objects through analyzing various requirements and constraints. We promote research and education of design theory and technology focusing the stages of planning, refinement, formation, and evaluation by integrating the inter-stage findings. Those results and experiences will enrich the products, architecture and living spaces in reality, that will make deeper understandings about the cooperative and symbiotic social system involving human, things, and the environment. |
System Intelligence |
-System augmentation through learning, recognition, retrieval, and transformation- Research topics in this cluster include analysis, generation, and presentation of varieties of information media, such as, text, sound, image, and so on. In spite of the wide research area, we put emphasis on the common frameworks of "learning", "recognition", "retrieval", and "transformation", without sticking to the particularity of individual medium. Through these frameworks, we aim at augmenting information processing systems and making them intelligent. On students' education, we focus not only on cultivating research skills of problem finding, formalization, and solution, but also on noble research ethics as future researchers. |
Physical Science and Engineering |
-Creation of new technologies based on physics- We are engaged in research and education of creating novel mechanical and photonic devices and measurement systems by making use of ways of thinking and knowledge in physics. Research topics include fabrication of micromachine devices and soft actuators, optical signal transmission and processing, digital holography and holographic data storage, photothermal microscopic imaging, and mathematical modeling and analysis of physical systems. |
Nanomaterials |
-Aiming at creation and application of functional nanomaterials for the future- We conduct education and research on the important theories and technologies for understanding and controlling, measuring, and expressing functions of materials and biological phenomena at the nano-level by both theoretical and experimental chemistry. We aim to train engineers and scientists who can accomplish innovative manufacturing and conservation of resources and environment. |
Nanotechnology |
-Investigate materials in nano-scale, and create novel technologies- We seek to develop novel functional materials and devices through a control and manipulation of atoms and molecules that constitute materials. Based on the physics of nano-scale materials, our research and education are especially focused on the core fields of nanotechnology, which comprise synthesis of novel materials, advanced measurement of various properties, and exploring novel functions of materials and their applications to devices. |
Intelligent Modeling |
-Modeling all phenomena including people and nature- This cluster involves education and research regarding modeling objects and phenomena in real world. We study the methods for modeling phenomena in a wide range including mathematical concepts, shape, multimedia information, society and environment, and the theory and the techniques to solve the problems in those area through design and analysis of systems, computer simulation. |
